Zodiac Love Matches And Compatibility

July 8th, 2008 · No Comments

When I had my star sign reading, I was surprised by how down to earth it was. When I first decided to look into zodiac love matches, I had expected see this very typical gypsy setup, but the place I went to was a pretty ordinary looking office. Of course, there were astrological themes in the decorations on the wall, but they were actually quite tasteful and lovely. I thought that the zodiac love match might be a little bit more interesting than I had expected it to be.

To say that I used to be skeptical about zodiac love matches would be putting things mildly. I was downright dismissive. I could not see any logical reason why astrology would work. I was raised in a very science heavy family, and my parents told me that logic was the ultimate rule of the universe. Zodiac sign love matches, on the other hand, displayed no respect for reason as far as I was concerned. How could the star sign in the sky have any effect on how your future turned out, much less on who you should marry?

Nonetheless, I went to get a zodiac love match on a friend's dare. She was exactly the opposite of me. Whereas I was analytical, she was very intuitive. Whereas I was skilled in science, she was a great lover of the humanities. Whereas I believed that sharing common ideas and philosophies was the key to love, she believed that zodiac love matches were an invaluable resource for anyone looking for more success and romance.

Now the really uncanny thing is that the current girl I am seeing – someone I could see spending the rest of my life with – perfectly matches with my zodiac love match. She looks much like the psychic told me she was, and I met her in one of my math classes, as was predicted. Maybe it means something and maybe it doesn't, but I certainly am not going to dismiss astrologers out of hand anymore.

I knew that zodiac love matches had a lot to do with what signs you should date in what signs you shouldn't according to astrology. What I didn't realize was how detailed an astrological chart can be. My zodiac love sign not only predicted that I should fall in love with an Aquarius, but it also told me where I was likely to meet her and what she would look like. I was skeptical about these details, but I wrote them down for later reference.

Combat The Effects Of Global Warming

July 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

One of the most important things to do to combat the effects of global warming is to educate kids. Adults are very good at accepting things – that is our strength. Kids, on the other hand, are good at challenging people and making us think differently. Doing a unit on energy conservation, pollution, or global climate change is a great way to help your students become the informed citizens they will have to be. If we are going to stop the ravages the planet is undergoing now, we need to train citizens of the future who are willing to make sacrifices in the name of saving the planet Earth.

Environmental education has been going on for decades. Nonetheless, it has taken on a new urgency in the last couple of years. Only a little while ago, people were still debating the causes of global warming. A lot of folks simply didn't want to admit that our actions have consequences that were destroying the planet. Although the extent of the effect of global warming is still being debated, one thing is clear: it is much worse than we had previously thought, and we had better begin to prepare for it.

A great activity you can do on the effects of global warming is to work with your students to decrease individual energy consumption. Talk about all the ways that energy is wasted – by leaving the heat on, by turning on lights in rooms that you aren't using, and all the other energy wasters that many of us take for granted on a daily basis. Challenge your students to take stock of their own families habits and try to make a change. Have them monitor how much energy they use before and after they start to conserve resources. Although it requires the parents to participate, this is still an excellent project. Most families will agree to do it, and your students will benefit greatly.

There are many different ways that you can address the effects of global warming in the classroom. There are plenty of environmental advocacy groups out there that make excellent resources available for doing a global warming lesson plan. Even better, you can hire an expert to come in and speak to your class. In your community there is likely to be an environmental education community center staffed by people who are more than happy to talk to your students about saving the environment. Best of all, they will usually come in for free.

The Chinese New Year Celebration

July 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

When I used to live in San Francisco, we would take the Chinese new year celebration pretty seriously. Some of my housemates were Chinese, you see, and their enthusiasm for the parade was contagious. They would get all sorts of Chinese new year decorations  – Paper lanterns, electronic dragons with flashing eyes, streamers, banners, and all sorts of other finery. The best part for me, however, was the firecrackers. I have never seen people so excited about fireworks before! They were practically giddy with excitement as they lit them. In a culture where everyone is so jaded about everything, the Chinese new year celebration provides a welcome break.

Although Chinese new year celebrations are a lot of fun, you should be careful bringing children. Don't get me wrong – it is a perfectly safe place for children to be in most regards. At a Chinese new year celebration in San Francisco, practically half the crowd is made up of kids in some sections of the parade route. There are, however, added dangers. At a big Chinese new year parade, the crowds can be positively overwhelming.

With so many people rushing back and forth and so much noise, smoke, music, and dance, it is easy for children to get separated from their parents. If you have kids – particularly young kids – hold onto them tightly! Consider watching the Chinese new year celebration from an elevated vantage point – perhaps a nearby restaurant. Even better, have your own New Year's party at home. You can watch the parade march on TV, and celebrate in a safe manner using Chinese decorations. Throw in a few fireworks, and you have the makings of a great party.

The celebration of the Chinese new year traditions of New York and San Francisco are two of the most interest cultural events, and best parties, in the country. A lot of people are familiar with the basics of the Chinese new year celebration – the dragon dance, the fireworks, the parade – but until you have seen it all first hand, you can't really imagine what it is like. It can be actually a little bit scary the first time. Traditional American parades with car horns, sirens, and marching bands are raucous enough. When you add giant dragons And ear bursting firecrackers to the mix, the combination is truly overwhelming. Don't go to a Chinese new year parade if you are in a quiet, introspective mood. Go there expecting to see a great and impressive spectacle!

Choosing A Decorative Accent Pillows

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments

When choosing decorative accent pillows, you have to first decide if you want them to be for show only, for comfort, or for both. You also have to think about who lives in your home. Do you have pets? Do you have children? Does either you or your husband have a job or hobby that might mean you come in and flop down on something with less than clean clothing? Just how much do you want to spend on these decorative accent pillows anyway? Once you have answered all of these questions you can then go shopping.

I always thought of the pillows on my mom’s couch as just pillows. I always held one on my lap when I was feeling a bit insecure, or I would put one under my head when I would lie on the couch. I never thought of them as decorative pieces, and that is probably because they were not really thought of that way by my mother either. They were in a way, but they were - in her eyes - meant to be more functional than decorative. What is great is that decorative accent pillows; can be both if that is what you wish.

For decorative accent pillows that will not be used for anything else, you can usually have your pick of anything that you find. When choosing either type, go for a color that is in your room of choice, but that is not once of the main colors. Think of matching your decorative accent pillows with your accessories in the room. Don’t match them up with the carpet or wall colors. If you really can’t seem to find what you want, you can always make these on your own very easily. Find the fabric you want, and make as many as you want. You may even want to make pillows for every room in the home.

You can find functional decorative accent pillows anywhere you find home accessories. What you should look at is the material of which they are made, and how well sewn they are. Delicate accent pillows are generally made for looks more so than for toughness, so they will not stand up well to rough handling. The sewing might be the first to go, and the fabric may stain easily. Look for tough materials and take a peak at the stitching for extra strong yet decorative accent pillows. Don’t worry, these are pretty common and you can usually find exactly what you want.

Getting A Novel Published, Step By Step

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The first step in getting a novel published is, of course, writing it. Though it might sound easy enough if you have the drive to do it, most don’t realize that this is harder than they think. A large percentage of most who start a novel never get it done. The next step is getting it sent out to those who might want to publish the work. This is something that an even smaller percentage do. There is plenty of competition out there, but it would be even worse if everyone who ever thought of getting a novel published actually submitted it for consideration.

There are many directions you can go when you want to write for a living. Some go the freelance route writing for magazines and for online publications, and they find that this is what fulfills them the most. Others go into technical writing and find the pay so good that they don’t care to do anything else. However, many writers, no matter what they do to pay the bills, think about writing a book someday. If this is an itch for you, you do have to know how to go about getting a novel published into today’s publishing world.

If you find that doing this on your own is not getting you anywhere, you may want to get a literary agent that can help you with getting a novel published. You have to take the same approach you would take with a publishing company, however. You have to find someone who works in your genre, and that is willing to take on your work. They may read it and not like it, but someone else may find it publishable material. You won’t know until you try. You never want someone who wants you to pay them to read your book, but rather someone who gets a percentage after they have succeeded in getting a novel published for you. Even in the world of literary agents there are scam artists of which you should beware.

You may find that getting your novel published is very hard, and you may not even get anyone to read it. You should get a copy of the current year’s Writer’s Market to be sure you are sending your novel to the right companies and to ones that will take your submission. One of the biggest mistakes some make when they are trying to get someone to publish a novel is that they send a horror submission to a company that only deals in romance, or that does not take unsolicited manuscripts. Getting Writer’s Market will save you time and money when submitting your work.

Magnificent Glass Hummingbird Feeders

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments

There is nothing better in the summer than a backyard filled with natural beauty ranging from plants to wildlife. No, I'm not talking about deer and coyotes here; I'm actually thinking on a much smaller scale. Tiny hummingbirds with their wings vibrating, flitting about from flower to flower in your garden. It is a glorious sight indeed, and I decided to up my viewing pleasure by purchasing glass hummingbird feeders that would attract the little creatures to my yard.

I was having so much fun shopping for my own glass hummingbird feeders that it didn't occur to me right away that these beautiful items would also make wonderful gifts for friends and relatives who love the outdoors as much as I do. However, once the idea came to me, I began shopping with a renewed sense of gusto since I know plenty of people that would love the opportunity to watch these miniature creatures in their own yards.

I found a magnificent selection of these glass hummingbird feeders online. Many of these items were true works of art, with delicate shapes and brilliant colors that would instantly spruce up my yard. While the traditional red hue was a popular option for these products, I also found choices in green, blue, and purple that would add a rainbow of shades to my outdoor space. There were glass hummingbird feeders that could hang from staked hooks over my plants and others on poles that could be installed directly into the ground, peeking up above the flowers in my garden.

Some of the websites that offered the glass hummingbird feeders also had gift sets that included all of the necessary components in a single lovely package. This made my gift shopping super easy, because I could pick up a couple of these sets while I was shopping for other items for myself. The pieces that I chose have made a lovely addition to my yard, and I have spent many hours out there watching these amazing little critters enjoy the bounty of my garden.

What a great way to give the gift of the outdoors, by purchasing one of these beautiful glass hummingbird feeders and a bottle of nectar to fill it up. I even added a couple of plants that are known to attract hummingbirds, like hollyhocks and columbines. Butterfly bushes are another fun option and I found some lovely colors that would coordinate quite beautifully with the glass hummingbird feeders that I chose.

If you are interested in doing some bird watching of your own this summer, check out the amazing selection of glass hummingbird feeders available online. I think you'll find this hobby as relaxing as I do!

Collect Madame Alexander Dolls

June 25th, 2008 · No Comments

I love figurines and I love collectibles, and I can satisfy both of my fetishes with the very popular line Madame Alexander dolls available today. These beautiful creations are much more than just a mere toy; each one is a carefully crafted work of art. The beauty is all in the details, from the long strands of hair, to the hand-painted faces, and even the individual fingertips. These figures have been lovingly handmade for generations, even though the original founder passed away nearly twenty years ago.

Since I love my collection of Madame Alexander dolls and I'm always looking for ways to expand it, I went online to find new pieces to buy and learn more about the company that started it all. I learned that this company began almost a century ago, in the year 1923. The first figures were crafted of cloth, since plastic didn't come into vogue as a production material until after WWII.

I particularly love the gorgeous outfits that adorn Madame Alexander dolls, complete with adorable accessories that are so carefully coordinated to the rest of the look. There are purses, hats, jewelry — and of course, shoes that put my own wardrobe to shame! I have pieces in my collection that are characters from books, figures from history, and natives from a variety of cultures.

I love my Amanda Fairchild and my Jadde Lee, and I enjoy collecting additional outfits for them whenever I can. After all, what fun are Madame Alexander dolls if you cannot dress them and indulge in a bit of playtime once in a while? Most of the time, I have them displayed on a few shelves in my room where I can gaze at them adoringly whenever I like. And when the time comes to add to my collection, I can shop for Madame Alexander dolls online where I get the best selection and prices available. I really couldn't ask for anything more!

I have a couple of pieces from those early years, but most of mine are primarily from the last couple of decades. I particularly like the high fashion Alex collection, with figures that are more similar to Barbie in structure, but made of a much higher quality and adorned with the most elegant wardrobes that I have ever seen outside of the red carpet in Hollywood.Although the company could not manufacture many figures during the war years, it made up for the lull by winning the Fashion Academy Gold Medal for excellence in costuming four years in a row in the early 1950's. Everyone wanted one of these Madame Alexander Dolls during that era, when the clothing was as beautiful as the figures themselves.

Enhance the Décor of Your Home With Modern Lamps

June 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

One of the most popular rooms in the home to use this type of lighting source is the bedroom. The main reason is that a lamp gives off just the right amount of subtle light. If you want to read in bed, without keeping your partner awake, you can turn on your bedside lamp. It’s also the ideal amount of light to watch television by. There are many modern lamps that look wonderful in bedrooms and the best part is they come in all different sizes.

Lighting is an important aspect in our homes. Once the sun goes down and we can’t live off of that light, it is nice to have a source of light that we can control whenever we want. Not only is it functional for us to have, it can also be a source of decoration. Some light sources are designed to not only light up a room but to also complete a room in a decoration sense. You can even buy a light fixture strictly for decoration. Around the house, it is convenient to have lamps since they are easy to turn on and give you just the right amount of light. You don’t need to have the ceiling lights on most of the time and you can save money through lamps. Modern lamps make for a great way to decorate your home and to let a little light shine through.

Kids love having character inspired items in their bedrooms or playrooms. If your son loves race cars, you can find modern lamps in this shape for his dresser. Ballerina lamps are usually perfect for your little princess. Just be mindful of where you place the lamp if it’s in a child’s space. Nothing is quite as tempting as turning it on and off if you’re only three or four-years-old. Until your child matures a bit, keep it up and out of their reach.

It’s often the small things that make the biggest statement in our homes. Carefully choosing decorative modern lamps to enhance your space will complete your interior look.

Don’t neglect the other rooms in your home. In your living room, you can have a stand up lamp in the corner. This looks really nice if placed behind an accent table or even a sofa. Always remember to put the lamp in a spot that makes it easily accessible. You want to be able to turn it on and off as need be.

Small tables are usually needed in rooms, especially where you entertain. If you buy a few matching modern lamps you can strategically place them around the room on these tables. To finish off the look add a few scented candles, some fresh flowers and framed images of your family to the tables. Once you’ve done this you’ve instantly created a cozy, warm look and tone to the room.
